Hey, look what we found!
At dinner the other night, talking with Peter who was busy transferring files from old computer to new one, discussion turned to the photos that he had taken of D'Arcy at 5 days. I used to have a hard copy of two of these, but never on disk. So we looked through some of the files on the old computer, and there they were. I bring them to you all now, for your amusement! He still looks the same to me, only he doesn't have the amazing crease across his nose any more, or the enormous lump on his head (which you can't see in any of these pics).

I have realised that when I posted this from Flickr two things happened.
One, I got a title for the post, which I don't know how to do otherwise. Bugger. Any clues anyone?
Two, the descriptions of the photos didn't come with them.
So in relation to Two...D'Arcy is eating sushi at the food court. He likes inari, which is a sweetened bean curd wrapper stuffed with rice. He used to eat other types, but now prefers it bland. A big carb eater this one. Would eat tinned spaghetti on toast a lot if I let him.
Pyjamas. D'Arcy is in his PJs 'cos the courier came with the camera at 8.30. We had slept in and were just hanging in bed chatting (as you do when you're single with only one child) when the camera arrived. Of course we wanted to try it out straight away, so we have photos of us in our jarmies. I may even post the one D'Arcy took of me soon. Mrsd admired said PJs in a comment below and I was moved to rave about them, so decided to turn it into a post...(I've been thinking and raving a lot about clothes lately) D'Arcy has 4 pairs of one piece PJs (sold as 'blanket sleepers'), all of which I got in the US, as we can't get them here past size 2. He likes the pink ones best, though the others are lilac, sky blue and deep red. They came in sets of two, one is a 'boy' set and one is a 'girl' set...the 'boy' ones have space ships and wrecking machines embroidered on the breast, the 'girl' ones have balloons and flowers. In my next life I am going to design brightly coloured gender non-specific clothes for children of all ages...

Today's activities
Lunch at the local food court was the first adventure of the day, followed by a visit to the science centre. The first stop there is always the mechanical dinosaur exhibit, paying particular attention to the mother with the nest of eggs and hatchlings, and the T-Rex, noticing today that it has a tooth missing "where it bit the triceratops" says D'Arcy.
There is a new exhibit for 0-6 year olds where they can explore scientific stuff without noticing. A particular favourite was the shop area - a bakery complete with aprons, plastic food, and a cash register. The place was packed (school hols) so there were lots of customers and co-workers in the bakery. There was a vet's surgery, water play, a climbing frame for gross motor development, a buliding area, and a sensory room. We spent hours there, and I reckon we'll be back. Fortunately I took out membership today which gets us in free and gets us discounts at the shop and a few other perks. Well worth it, if you think you'll go often enough.
Most of the other exhibits are a bit beyond him at the moment, but we do like to wander through and see what there is. All up it was a surprisingly relaxed afternoon, and they had to throw us out at closing.
I have some photos, but not very good ones, I'll have to do some editing and see if there are any worth posting. I am currently confused about how to make them small enough to upload over the phone line, so I emailled them to myself first (go iPhoto) and then sent them to Flickr, though I remember that I can email them direct, I think. Bugger. I wish it wasn't so late!

New Camera
So we got a new digital camera today! Sent from the US, it is complelty adequate for our needs. D'Arcy can use it without me getting too worried about it... it will record video with no sound, and all this for US$100.
So we took a photo of the wiggly hands, and then went and watched them on the TV...*sigh* it is a shame that they have next to no female characters on the show (can we even count Dorothy?) Still, perhaps D'Arcy's pink PJs make up for it?

"Hey Mum, look at this"
"Hmmm?"
(waves hands in front of chest with index fingers out, thumbs up, other fingers tucked in)
"Cool. Wiggly hands"
Ah, the wonders of television and coloured skivvies.

Julie sent me this Book meme a while ago, and I have been pondering on it...
1. You are stuck inside Fahrenheit 451; which book do you want to be? Well, it has been a very long time since I read this one...I think I'd have to say one of the Ursula Le Guin novels, maybe Left Hand of Darkness, for the very different worlds and people that exist there. Diversity is the spice of being good.
2. Have you ever had a crush on a fictional character? Yes, but I can't think which...Ah yes.I'm currently thinking anthropomorphically...Elyne Mitchell wrote stories about brumbies (wild horses) which I read endlessly when I was 10 or so, so I wanted to be a brumby mare and run in Thowra's herd. (I know, weird shit.) Possibly also Skarp-Hedin from 'Njal's Saga' 'cos he reminded me of someone else. And lots of Ursula Le Guin's blokes in general.
3. Last book(s) you read? Jasper Fforde Something Rotten was the last new book I read...no I lie..it was Kerry Greenwood "Heavenly Pleasures"
4. What are you currently reading? Lots of re-reading....various Bill Bryson ("Made in America" "Notes From a Big Country"), "Clan of the Cave Bear", Ursula Le Guin "Changing Planes"
5. Five books you would take to a desert island? Lynne Reid Banks "The L-Shaped Room" which I can stand re-reading a fair bit. Probably The Lord of the Rings which I haven't bothered to read for ages, but keep meaning to. Maybe some Austen (I've never read any!). King James Bible. Good Poems, or whatever it is called - collected by Garrison Keillor.
Who are you going to pass this stick to and why? Dunno....Willow? I would like see more of where her head is at. I'll keep thinking on who else I'd like to hear from, or if you have a burning desire to answer, leave me a comment!

Something that I read on Kill the Goat reminded me that D'Arcy has been a dinosaur for some weeks. Called Neera. Based on the Disney
Dinosaursmovie I think. He has two, soon to be three, hatchlings. This is the fourth round of fantasy play babies he has had - first was some lion cubs when he was Kiara, then some seal pups when he was Arcto the seal, then some more cubs when he was Kovu and mated to Vitani. Now he has dinosaur babies. He seems very interested in not being a boy at the moment, but I can't quite get to the bottom of it. It is one of those murky places you hit as a parent where you wonder
what is going on?. Any other mums of boys got any hints?
He's been with Nick since Friday night, as I went to Melbourne for the weekend, so I'm really looking forward to seeing him. I want to see if he likes mangosteens, which I think are fabulous, but may be an acquired taste. I fed him lychees when they were in season, but after the first one he said
I only like to lick themand handed me the fluffy remains.
One of his favourite movies right now is the classic Storm Boy and he especially likes the character of Fingerbone, see previous post on interest about indigenous characters. Which also reminds me, the word that D'Arcy was singing in 'Black Kids of Australia' was supposed to be Wiradjuri....And I just did a Google search for Johnny Huckle and came back with a few thousand hits! The man is good.
